Greece: All Time Classic – Jhankar Agarwal
It was in November 2015, that 5 of my friends and I planned to take a short break from our monotonous working lives to explore Greece. Although it was only short trip, we made sure to make the most out of the places we saw.
We started our journey with Ancient Athens, the land of Gods. Since most of us are architecture enthusiasts, we made sure to visit the Acropolis with its iconic Parthenon, the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Olympics site. The walks around the city showcased its old history, browsing in the daily Monastiraki Flea Market and Plaka, which offered a warren of historic streets jammed with souvenir shops.
Next coming to the Greek Cuisines, we experienced many mouth-watering delicacies. My favorite being the street foods including Saganaki (fried cheese) and the Greek’s special beer & wines!.
Besides the typical Greek white architecture and its mythology, we also saw the artistic dovecots houses and churches. Since it was a short trip for us, we were stuck whether to finish the trip with ‘Santorini’ (The beautiful ‘postcard-perfect photos’ worthy Island) or ‘Meteora’ (the hike to monasteries on the top of the rock towers). We took the typical stand of the young & adventurous, and chose Meteora leaving Santorini for another visit for honeymoon’s or mid-aged holidays. Known as the secret Marvel, it was indeed the most beautiful striking natural beauty that I have ever seen. The massive pinnacles of smooth rock seemed like they came right from a science-fiction or a fantasy tale. The monasteries atop them added to the strange and beautiful landscape, connecting us with the divine! Serene, spiritual, magical, mystical, extraordinary, breathtaking, immense, inspiring, and impressive, these are some of the words I would use to describe the miraculous Meteora phenomenon.
Even though it’s almost been 4 years now, but the essence of the place still resides within me. Sea and sun, world-class monuments, delicious cuisine, mesmerizing mountain monasteries, unique archaeological sites, friendly inhabitants, to name just a few: travelling to Greece was a memorable Experience. It lives up to all the hype!
